The Federal Office of Rural Health Policy has been working to identify areas where the distribution of funding and support does not mirror the population distribution. Rural public health funding for rural counties is sadly lacking. With lack of funds, goes fewer direct jobs, fewer indirect jobs, less support for care givers, less resources for rural patients...
"We thought some of you might be interested in the following information on rural public health that was discussed at a recent brownbag lunch presentation for HRSA staff. As you can see, the e-mail below includes a set of slides and a link to a new publication from the National Association of County and City Health Officials that breaks down data by rural and urban measures. The slides are the new findings from NACCHO's Anjum Hajat, who has analyzed some of NACCHO's infrastructure data to determine rural and urban differences. What is really unique about this is Anjum's use of a new classification system called the Rural Urban Commuting Areas that allows a census-tract based analysis. And, in a nod toward self interest, I'd like to add that we now have these breakdowns thanks to a project we funded with NACCHO through a cooperative agreement. Prior to this, there was little rural specific data on local health departments." Tom Morris
Subject: Brown Bag Presentation - LPHA infrastructure
Hello everyone, Thank you for attending the brown bag presentation earlier today. The slides from my talk are attached. If you are interested in accessing the metro-nonmetro data from the recent NACCHO publication, Local Public Health Agency Infrastructure: A Chartbook, you can do so at http://www.naccho.org/general428.cfm.
For those of you interested in accessing the data set directly, here is the web address: www.icpsr.umich.edu Search under study number 3185. The data set is listed as Local Health Department Infrastructure Study, 1999-2000: [United States] Brown, Carol K., and Michael R. Fraser. Thanks again! Anjum
