Same State Birth to Practice Tables

Robert C. Bowman, M.D.

Medical school connections to practice are not as important as residency connections regarding retention in practice in a state, but again some states and schools do better than expected from geography, Mercer, U TN, LSU, Arkansas, Indiana. This suggests a coordinated effort between various levels of education.

Admissions and/or Geography can have an impact on distribution and retention in the pipeline, as well as recruitment into rural practice locations. The first table involves those who have birth, medical school, residency, and practice in the same state.

Geography is a factor in Puerto Rico and California, however some schools tend to select students that are likely to be same state x 4, and rural practice is a common end point.

Instate Retention of Family Physicians: Dependable Primary Care Workforce Retained Within States

Same State Med School and Residency

Larger states such as Texas and California tend to have more instate retention.

Larger, more populous states dominate in the table below regarding same state med school and residency. States such as Arkansas also do well, as do the osteopathic schools.  The FP Grads from the following schools tended to go to residency in the same state as their medical school.
